Community Gardens Program
A Good Idea
Description
The Community Gardens Program works with various groups in the community to create community gardens in San Antonio’s neighborhoods. The guiding principles of the program include sustainability and shared knowledge. The program is designed to improve the health of San Antonio’s citizens and the environment, beautify neighborhoods and strengthen the community. The gardens provide a place for people to meet and bond, exercise, educate children, grow fresh produce and flowers, learn and practice land stewardship, and preserve the city’s green space. The program provides financial support to start the garden, as well as physical resources and shared knowledge.
Goal / Mission
The Community Gardens Program aims to improve the health of the residents of San Antonio and the environment by creating community gardens, which provide a place for gathering, exercising, and learning, as well as preserving San Antonio’s green space.
Results / Accomplishments
The program began in 2006 with four pilot projects. Since then, Green Spaces has been contacted by numerous community groups who have been interested in starting a community garden. Ten new gardens were created in 2008 and another three in early 2009.
