Why is this important?
This measure is important because it can indicate disparities and inequities that may result in varying number years of life expected. The longevity of a person's life can be related to the quality of life, health outcomes, and racism, among other factors that impact the life expectancy of an individual and/or racial and ethnic groups.

Technical note: Life expectancy was calculated using data from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Vital Records Business Intelligence System (VRBIS) death records and California Department of Finance (DOF) population projections. Note that data are pooled estimates collected over a period of five years to increase stability. The method used to calculate life expectancy at birth was adopted from the South East England Public Health Observatory (SEPHO) Life Expectancy Calculator. Use caution when comparing Life Expectancy across geographies because of different sources.
